The moon hung high in the air, blanketing the entire city in a pale white light. The streets were silent as the last of the tavern’s patrons began funnelling out of the doors and started to stumble back to their homes. As Randall had predicted, the pickpocket was the last to leave. He shouted something inaudible to the innkeeper before making a rude gesture and began walking down the alley.

Anna emerged from the shadows, dagger in hand. It felt good to hunt once again. However, this time was different. In the past, she had only hunted for survival, while now she hunted for pure pleasure.

Years of practice came back to her in an instant: walking silently behind her prey, being able to keep out of sight, and with the patience needed to wait for the opportune moment to strike. She twirled the dagger in her numb fingers as she stalked the pickpocket. She was going to make sure that he never hurt anyone ever again.

After ten minutes of stalking, the man finally turned to go down a side alley. Anna smiled as she gripped the dagger’s handle tightly. This will be the last alley you ever see.

She cautiously entered the alleyway and saw that the pickpocket was leaning against a stone wall, relieving himself. The sound of piss melting snow, and the man’s drunken humming, reverberated off the buildings.

Anna stayed in a low crouch, slowly creeping into the shadows of the building. Once she was behind him, she lunged.

The blade pierced the soft flesh of his back, and the man let out a surprised gasp. She ripped the dagger free and plunged it in again, this time just under his floating rib.

The drunken pickpocket spun around and tried to strike her, but she was too fast and he was too drunk. She nimbly ducked his clumsy, flailing punch and quickly swept his feet from under him. The man landed with a hard thud.

Anna climbed on top of him and plunged her dagger into his stomach. Blood and bile leaked out of the corners of the man’s mouth, as his breathing became laboured. She twisted the blade, forcing the man to let out a garbled scream.

Anna leaned down until she could feel the warmth of his breath on her cheeks. His breath stank of stale ale and rotten cabbage.

“Do you remember me?” she hissed.

“G..G….Greaver,” the man stammered, through a mouthful of blood.

She ripped the dagger out once again and pressed the blade to the man’s throat. The pickpocket’s eyes bulged at the sudden realization that his life would end at the hands of this little girl.

Anna’s lips contorted in a sickening smile. The fact that this man felt as helpless as she did when he attacked her filled her body with joy.

She stared into the man’s fearful eyes and made a mental note to remember this moment. She savoured the power that she had. The ability to end or spare this wretch’s life was in the palms of her hands.

But she knew that this would only end one way.
